A New Connection in the Northwest, The Columbia Gateway bridge prepares for a future of growth and new demands.

Built in 1917, the original bridge was the first road connection between Portland and Vancouver. A second, identical span was built in 1957 and North and Southbound traffic was split. With a humpback section providing 71 feet of clearance, and vertical lift sections allowing 176 feet of clearance, the bridge has inefficiencies built into its design. Narrow lanes, lack of expansion space, inhospitable footpaths, and age have made the bridge outdated.
